Breadcrumbs for food?
« on: June 20, 2009, 19:58 »
I have a stale loaf, can I dry it and crumb it and feed it to the chickens? Also, can I give them fresh bread torn up into chunks like I would to the ducks at the park?

Thanks!

Bread is not really good for them Spud  :(

Too much carbohydrate, not enough protein and far too much salt.  It's OK for a little treat in the afternoons if well moistened but only in small amounts.

Thanks for that Auntie :) I will chuck the bread away then and carry on digging a small veg patch in the garden for chuck food! I shall also check to make sure Mrs STB hasn't logged herself in on my computer next time ;)

Layers pellets or mash are the perfectly ballanced food for them  :)  A few little extras in the afternoon are fine :D

my chickens love bits of bread and i always toast some bread then cut it into small pieces and i will add the toast with pasta and various bits of vegetables that i have boiled up and drained and i take them a saucepan full down , the chickens go crackers for it .
chickens will eat virtually any waste food along with their layers pellets, thats the beauty of keeping them they will eat most of your leftovers and give you an egg in return .

Perhaps a poor feeding regimen contributed to the high amount of sickness you've had in your flock  :(

no the reason my birds got infected was because i stupidly bought 4 leghorns from a different source and they were pooing yellow the following day and i ended up with 16 birds doing the same with snot running from their nose's , their diet had nothing at all to do with it. for 3 months i threw medicines and vitamins at them to no avail and the vets i phoned did not deal with poultry , it wasn't till i finally got rid of those 4 leghorns that the problems started to clear .
my 12 remaining hens have been in superb form for 7 months now and the odd piece of bread or toast does not harm them one bit , a chicken will eat almost anything without any harm and i don't give them loads just a couple of pieces between 12 hens and not everyday either but quite regular . giving your chickens titbits of bread and pasta will not harm them one bit and aunt sally you probably do the same yourself .
