Newb question - Plastic Tubing
« on: June 18, 2009, 08:09 »
My wife and I have just been fortunate enough to get a share of an allotment plot recently,  we are complete novices though.

We've seen a lot of plots where people have used rigid plastic piping, maybe 3/4" in diameter as a support for their netting in sort of hoop arrangements.

Where can you get this stuff, we've taken a quick look at the usual DIY places but no joy, any pointers would be gratefully received.

Cheers.

Think that sounds like standard overflow pipe (screwfix 30m Pack (10 x 3m). A 21.5mm solvent weld £12.71)

Don't forget some 90% elbows  :)

It's 25mm blue water pipe.  Some will say that you should use something uva resistant but mine was free so can't argue.  As above, builders merchants like Wickes do it and I've seen it in B&Q.

Cheese makes everything better.

Good value HERE

This was the cheapest place I could find it after a fairly exhaustive search. :)

Jewsons are the cheapest locally. £15 for 25m of 25mm. The black variety is UV resistant but is hard to find and always more expensive.

That's the same link as I gave scezy.  It does seem to be the cheapest around  :)

Hi

On a gardening note rather than DIY can I ask what is in the bed ? Is it broad beans ?
And why would Broad Beans need netting in ?

Thanks

Yes, it's broad beans in the bed.  I have to net because of pigeons and sparrows eating anything that tries to grow above ground.

Also, as I grew a tall variety, the net keeps them upright.

I got my blue MDPE pipe on eBay (I agree, black UV resistant pipe would be better).  And my debris netting too!

A ten year old can build it - proof in my blog!

Thanks Ice,

I am a fan  of your raised beds and I think I'll have to consider building some !

Thanks

I made them out of gravel board.  Not free, but cheap enough.

If you have problems that mean that digging is difficult or have time issues they are great.  They also help to improve drainage on heavy clay soils like mine.
