Tasted my first Raspberry
« on: June 10, 2009, 13:33 »
Tasted my first Autumn bliss Raspberry today, surprised by flavour as I have never tasted a raspberry fresh fruit at all before.  Its sort of sweet but a bit acidic at the sme time.  Nice flavour but nothing compared to strawberries, bit weak in comparison.  Not worried though as got them to make smoothies.

There was just one I have been waiting for it to ripen.  The others are still green, this one was at the top.

I'm curious as to why it is fruit ripe already?

I wouldn't expect Summer Raspberries to fruit for a few weeks yet, and into July ... and Autumn Fruiting varieties not until August.

Taste may be a lot better when August arrives :)

You are supposed to cut down Autumn fruiting raspberries in the Spring to make them concentrate on growing new canes which crop in the Autumn.  (No I did not cut mine down either).  Autumn Bliss is not the best flavoured raspberry but is easy to grow.  This cannot be said for the better flavoured summer varieties, which at least round here, have a tendency to die out.

Cheers,

Gillie

No idea why fruited now.  Only planted in November.  I asked the company if I should cut down to 6 " as they were about 18" canes.  They said no they have already been pruned to where they should be.

I have read differing views on how far too cut them down as well.  For instance I have read someone say  they fruit from the top down,  so some only prune down to where they stopped fruiting, and get raspberries from June til the first frosts off the same plants.

Some cut half to the ground and leave half.  Seems there are many methods.

I've also heard a few say they prefer the flavour of autumn bliss to their summer ones and some say they were tasteless.

My garden is a little sun spot so probably encouraged them to fruit as did my threats.  My Toms and strawbs were early as well.  The apple tree fruit is also swelling already.

So who knows they are there now anyway and I will love and cherish them and scoff them hehehe

FWIW I think the phone initially pruning thing is a trade off.

Clearly you could have Fruit in the first year ...

... but from a transplanted plant the root system is compromised, and it is from the root system that "suckers" will be thrown up for next years crop.

A bit like Asparagus really ...

so pruning back, whether 6" or 18", is intended to devote more energy to the roots throwing up "suckers" so that you get more crop next year ... and the more the sucker the more the strength for the roots to throw up suckers in years after that too.

Exactly how much to cut back? The controversy will continue, no doubt!

It's the suckers that grow this year that will flower and fruit this year on an autumn raspberry.
If any of last years canes are not pruned as low as the ground they will have an early crop on.
When i planted mine i cut them down to about 3 inches and the tops i stuck in the ground between the plants hoping they would root. It is on a couple of these 'cuttings' that i have my early flowers....whether they are rooted enough to actually fruit ..i don't know.
