what to to with chicken waste?
« on: June 07, 2009, 16:15 »
Hi all - my regular bin of chicken poo from around the garden and clean outs from the chicken coop is getting ready for emptying once again. I don't really have room to compost it and early morning trips out to country lanes for disposal in hedgerows are not really satisfactory. I don't think the local amenities site would be too happy with it either. Just wondered what everybody else does.

ask if any gardeners/allotmenteers would like it - chicken poo is good for gardens so long as it's not directly on the leaves of plant. If they want to add it to their compost they can do.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I'd say using on your garden! I'm living next to a field so i have my own compost heap hidden away on it.

I'd say how about trying to find your local allotment site near you and asking anyone if they want it if they collect?

Not too keen on the lotty plotters route - any other ideas- surely you can't all have gardens big enough to spread the waste on!

Bag it and sell it at the gate!  It will pay for the girls food.

I bung some around my roses and clematis - fresh that is - and they've been fine.   I would have thought if you have room for chooks you'd have room for a bit of a bin to compost the poops in. Seems a shame to get rid of it

If you buy feed in plastic bags (I do deliberatly for this reason) bag it up, leave it behind shed or on allotment for a year, if your garden is long enough and you can stand the smell, obviously keep the top closed or wrapped around and it will be great for garden next year.  Or, as others have suggested, ready to sell.  Gardeners love it when it is in that state, they only have to tip it onto garden then.  £10 for 10 bags - no problem!

I keep mine in a bin with the lid on and this year I am growing my onions in it.  There was a bit on a local gardening show with a lad who grew all his onions in the stuff that came out his hen house.  I must say that my onions are looking pretty good on it this year so far but then my garden was starving for food before I moved in because it was full of blooming big conifers.

Having so many chooks, we get a lot of poop and what doesn't fit on the compost heap gets burned on the bonfire as it's shavings mainly.  The ash is then easier to spread around garden or in compost bins.

I have a large compo bin full of the stuff which I have to empty in a few weeks as I'm moving.  I'm taking it with me  :D  Too precious to leave behind.  I've not told my  husband yet  8)

You could put bags of it on Freecycle.  I must admit before I got my girls that I picked some up once and put it on the beds in winter.  There will always be gardeners happy to take it off your hands.
