Looking for snow pea seeds
« on: June 06, 2009, 14:02 »
Does anyone know where I can buy snow pea seeds from.

If that's not the right name for them they are grown for their pod before the actual peas develop.  The pod is plump and very sweet (not flat like mangetout).

Aha!  that the other name I couldn't think of!!!  I've been in France too long.  Even mangetout are an extreme rarity where I live, and I've forgotten half of the varieties you can get in the UK.

Try 'Heirloom Seeds' or Thomson & Morgan
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

looking at the web I think there's some confusion here - looks like snow pea can either mean a mangetout like Oregon Sugar Pod or a small round pea eaten in the pod - what do people think? the snow peas I get in wagamama are the 2nd kind i think..

These Sugarbon peas are not flat like mangetout....they get quite fat but only have teeny peas inside...it's the pods that are fat, not the peas. They are sooo sweet compared to mangetout

Hope they're what you are looking for :)
ps in the pic it looks as if the peas will get fat uh uh you have to eat them before that!

From WH Foods
Quote
Garden peas have rounded pods that are usually slightly curved in shape with a smooth texture and vibrant green color. Inside of them are green rounded pea seeds that are sweet and starchy in taste. Snow peas are flatter than garden peas, and since they are not fully opaque, you can usually see the shadows of the flat peas seeds within. Snap peas, a cross between the garden and snow pea, have plump pods with a crisp, snappy texture. The pods of both snow peas and snap peas are edible, and both feature a slightly sweeter and cooler taste than the garden pea. Garden peas are scientifically known as Pisum sativum.

So that's it then...snow peas are mangetout :tongue2: much prefer snap peas then, as that's what i've grown :)
