Thanks yorkie but I had already mentioned that in my earlier post  :), homework had been done (ex country park warden and gamekeeper relatives).
Staffies are softer than you think.

ok well i live in london
do i needed a licence to have a heavy duty air riffle?
im not going to get one just want to know x

You can get a sub12ft/lbs air rifle with very few restrictions. You are (Even with sub 12ft/lbs) however restricted where you can shoot it.

Regardless of all that, ANY type of air rifle is COMPLETELY UNSUITABLE for dealing with a fox (Not that you were thinking that)

I really think you need to go the route of fox-proofing.

i'm sorry you have a fox problem but taking pot shots at the fox won't help, even if you did kill it another will relace it very quickly, i have the same problem, i live on a farm and penning all my birds isn't an option, a good strong fence won't be any good as the fox will merely go over it, i think your only option would be to invest in electric poultry fencing, might be costly initially but the replacement of future birds will probably cost more, be aware that now the foxes know the hens are there, they will be back.

The trouble is, I guess, that you can't ever be watching every single one of your birds 24 hours a day, and that's the time that the fox can strike  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

i'm sorry to say they won't be unless you take action now, electric fencing, like foxy's, that will sort them, you do need to do it now, hindsight is a very good thing, but tell that to the 30 ex batts i lost in one go this time last year.
