Garlic Question
« on: June 05, 2009, 08:02 »
Most of my garlic have grown really big and half of the bulb is above ground level. They are purple and look alot like an onion. I cant see any cloves on them they look like one big fat bulb. Is this right? Will they split into bulbs later?
Thanks

I think it's a bit late to split now into cloves.  When we had this we asked Colin Boswell who owns the Garllic Farm here on the Island and he said it was because the cloves planted hadn't endured a cold enough spell earlier in the year.

I was also very late to plant - if they don't make cloves can you still use them perhaps roasted whole?
trying to be green except when blue

Oh dear  :(
They went in last year, end of November I think. Another blow, it's very frustrating!

They're still edible, just, very big.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Sharonx are you sure they have not formed cloves? The bulb will have a few layers of skin around the whole thing so may well not display the presence of individual cloves.

If you put them in in Nov then I would have said they would have had a good cold spell and would therefore have formed cloves.

All of mine are well under the surface so I have no idea what they are up to and until the look ready to pull I won't know.
