Kelvedon Wonder
« on: June 04, 2009, 16:53 »
Hi,

I had some Kelvedon Wonder peas from UK and have had a terrible germination rate - about 10-12%.  I've just picked the second small boiling and noticed hardly any more flowers on the plants.  Do they flower all at once, turn to pods and that's it or should more flowers come?

I have set a second sewing so I should get some more but it seemed an awful lot of time and trouble for so few peas if that's it, done.

Hope someone will advise.

Pauline

I wonder if you had a poor batch Pep. i've had a very good success rate, more than I can cope with. They are all just starting to flower now, but gradually, and they've not been put in their final planting position yet - still in their cells.

Good luck with your second sowing

That's your lot, I'm afraid. Unlike runner beans, they do not produce throughout the season.

Sadly. :(
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi Barney,
I suppose I could have had a bad batch, I don't know.  I've never had a garden big enough to grow much before.  I just wondered if they carried on flowering.

Hi Mumofstig,
I didn't sew them straight in the ground.  I set some in Ritchie's paper pots and the rest in plastic coffe beakers - the type used in vending machines.  We had a late start to the season weatherwise as it was still cold mid April.

Hi DD,
That, is really disappointing.  If I got some more sent over, would it be too late to start again?  It stays warm here until the end of November.

You can certainly try another sowing, but watch out for mildew in the warmer weather.

Thanks DD.  A friend is going to UK next week for a fortnight so I'll ask her to bring some back for me.  Nothing to lose.  The few we've just eaten by the way were gorgeous.
