its so exciting & thannkyou
« on: June 02, 2009, 15:49 »
just wanted to thank people on here - so much good advice all the time and im learning new things all the while

as a 1st time grower things are going quite well;

spinach is rampant, so much of it we can hardly keep up!
beetroot got off to a very shaky start but still have about 4 of the original seeds sown plus some extras i did the other weekend (think we did them far too early!)
cucumbers are growing despite the fact they were planted outside end april!
no sign of a courgette yet just a leafy plant though i think i spied a bud
potatoes are storming along in their pots - very itchy to have a rummage but i keep hearing you should wait till the foliage dies before you do that...
leeks seem pretty bad though, similar to the beetroot - not many of the original ones left so i have sown some more

cant remember what else we have now but its just so exciting!

 :) i cant wait... have just used some salad leaves and parsley from the garden some leeks from a friend and another friend gave me some gorgeous eggs in exchange for some of the too many seedlings i had! I have flowers on my early potatoes, pea pods forming and 3 teeny tiny tomatoes, more than I have ever grown before AND it is great fun   :lol:

I'm only in my second year of allotmenteering (is that the word?) and I've learnt a huge amount from John's book and this forum, although I lurk quite a lot.

Potatoes don't taste that different from shop bought, but the difference in the strawbs, tomatoes, and especially the salad leaves! No shop bought salad ever comes close to what we've grown.  And I'm not boasting - it's just true.  The leaves actually have proper flavour.  And I didn't realise that courgettes were actually supposed to taste of anything until someone gave me some they'd grown themselves and we grew our own last year.

It is great fun and I'm glad you're enjoying it too.
