layers not laying
« on: May 31, 2009, 20:12 »
Hello there,
we have 3 hens, (white leghorn, warren and light sussex) who we bought easter 2008 at POL.  They all layed well last yr then tailed off through the winter as we expected.  In Feb this yr we moved them to a plot we bought across the road, they had the same shed, but were allowed to free range.  The White leghorn is laying, but apart from an odd egg early in the season we haven't had any eggs from the other 2.  I have searched the land to see if they are laying anywhere else but cant find eggs anywhere.  In the meantime, this easter we bought another 9 POL layers (various hybrids) Our old warren is very much the top bird and is happily wandering about telling the others off.  Her and the sussex look healthy, have been wormed and had a dose of antibiotics as the leghorn needed some so they all had to have it, (from a poultry vet).  I just can't understand why they are not laying.  I do think they were definitely POL last yr as they had small combs and took a week or 2 to come into lay.  Anyone any ideas?  Thanks, Samantha

You may need to spend a day just sitting and watching them, it took us a few weeks to find where one of ours was laying and then found a big pile of eggs  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

Yes, combs red, maybe I will just watch....and wait, it seems impossible that they're not laying!  Thanks
