Thinking of taking up smoking
« on: May 28, 2009, 21:11 »
Well my doctor said I should get a hobby.

Does anyone have, or know of a website with the designs to build a smoke room?  We are curing bacon and want to branch out a little.

My brother, who is a builder, can make it so it can be fairly substantial.  Fankoo.
Cheese makes everything better.

Thanks for those links.  Lots to think over.

Aunty, someone on the forum link you posted voiced the same concern as me re someone using it as a loo.

Must admit that a lot of home smokehouses do resemble that little house out back

Yes, someone might well be smoking ham  ;) instead of sausages.

Here's another, this one without a half moon on the door.

Hi I made a little smoker out of a new metal dustbin and that has worked fine for me.
It is also said that you can use an old filing cabinet or one of the old long metal lockers.

all you would have to do then is make a few shelves for what ever you are going to smoke and something for the heat source at the bottom of the locker/ Dustbin, I have used a small electric hot plate and 1 of my wife's 7" metal pie tins for the wood shaving's.
I also put in a small pan of water to keep it a bit moist if needed.

I hope this may help a little.
It's better to be over the Hill than under it!!

Hot smoking or cold smoking?

BTW saw a small scale cheap way involving wooden barrels and metal tubing like used in air-con. I guess you are more into the large scale smoking.

Often liked the idea myself but only works if you have your own meat source IMO.

I can recommend Smoking and Curing by Keith Erlandson if you haven`t already got it.
There are several designs for smokehouses and lots of good info.

We made a smoker from a metal dustbin, an electric element and a few BBQ grills for shelves - damp woodchips in the bottom and away you go - most successful with fish and sweetcorn. We can get enough hot smoked goodies in one go for 8 people. We looked at building a permanent feature but as we don't need enough to feed the whole village nor to go into production we thought better of it.
