Grape advice for a dummy!!!
« on: May 28, 2009, 18:28 »
Hi, got a grape vine about a month ago and it seems to be doing ok but i have noticed that its got side shoot type leaves foming, not sure if i need to pinch these out or not. I've added a couple of pictures to help. Ohh ohh and i also have a very small thin green worm like thing growing as well out of the stem not sure what it is.

And just because i can i thought i'd add a pic of my little veg patch in my garden. lol

Many thanks in advance for any advice given.

Brad

I have a huge vine, growing over a Pergola.    Yours looks very healthy to me, don't pinch out anything, but plant it up soon, and it will be away.  Eventually, you can hack it back as you want, and every autumn, I take mine back to all of the big main branches.  Hope this help, regards, Mrs Bouquet

The green worm like things are the tendrils it uses to climb up things.  I don't know anyone that removes side shoots.  They grow so big it would be a full time task.

You need to be a bit careful with vines re pinching and pruning, as they literally can bleed to death if done wrongly and at the wrong time of year - Mrs Bouquet's advice is sound - but check out good fruit manuals or the net for tips on how and when to do it. Good luck :)

Hi, if you are using cane replacment take out the laterals to one leaf to feed the bud then next year bend it over and grow the laterals upwards from those buds. After that you can prune those laterals back hard for next years laterals, this is spur pruning.

Hiya

Has anyone actually grown 'proper' grapes? We've got three vines growing in the greenhouse in pots, they're really tall and there are a few clusters of grapes (I call them grapes, but the whole cluster is hardly the size of a grape, lol.

Will they grow? I haven't actually done anything with them this year, not applied manure or even put in a bigger pot.

Would love any advice,
Cheers
Herbie

generally you want to rub out any grapes that form within the first 3 years so the vine concentrates on root growth, then allow a couple of bunchs of grapes to form, it is sometimes worth pinching out individual grapes ina  bunch that is forming to provide space.

what you have to do, is actually start to thin out the bunches as they start to form.
I reduce them by about half.  This gives the remaining grapes space to mature.  Its a tedious job, so take your radio or whatever, and a glass of wine  ;) I find the easiest thing to do this job with is a thin pair of very pointed manicure scissors.  regards, and good luck  Mrs Bouquet

Don't forget to tap the stem to release the pollen to help pollinate the grape flowers too.

Hi, Herbie, what are you growing your pot grown vines in only they need to be in John Innes No. 3 and every year take off the top inch or two and replace with new J I No.3.
Feed with tomorite until grapes form.
