Cut and come again romaine lettuce
« on: April 05, 2007, 16:44 »
Hello

Was wondering I have Chartwell romaine lettuce growing in the conservatory at the mo'.

When seed packet says cut and come again where do you take the leaves from the outside or inside :?:

Do you wait until they are fully grown :?:

Thanks
Sheila

Outside.  You can start picking as soon as they are "big enough" - as a general guideline, I'd never pick more than 20% of the plant.

Thanks for clearing that up.  They look so fresh and clean I can't wait to eat them and I don't even usually eat lettuce (yeah I know weird, fussy eater).

Well, if you've got plenty of them, you can always eat the whole plant whenever you want.  It just won't come again

I like little gems and cut them when ready and then cut a cross in the stump and you get more lettce forming from the cut.  Brilliant as i only have to grow a row and it lasts me all summer.

Never tried that one Ziggy, but if I cut my cabbages off rather than pullig them out, I get little cabbages from the stumps!
