saving squash seeds
« on: May 25, 2009, 17:16 »
I know this is probably not very seasonal for most of you, but I had a large crown prince squash last halloween that due to family circumstances did not get carved and lay forgotten in the shed.

I want to grow some next year so took out all the seeds.I've washed them of all bits of flesh and dried them somewhere warmish.

Is all I need to do? Sorry to sound a bit dim but seeds I usually collect are nice and dry in seed pods  ::)

Sometimes you get a clear membrane on the seed which will rub off then into paper envelopes or i use plastic tablet tubes which have a dessicant in the lid.

Crown Prince is a great squash but it is an F1 hybrid so seed will not come true.

Squash are all promiscuous anyway so you will usually get some variation with home saved seed unless grown in isolation.

Having said that, theres nothing wrong with a bit of variation and the price of a packet of seed clinches the argument for me

Yes, it's abit of an experiment really. I think it was grown only with other Crown Prince plants, but as it is an F1 hybrid... who knows what might arise

Might advertise them in the Swap Shop later in the year --- wanted: home for unknown squash cross seeds :nowink:

What result, if any, did you get?

I have just harvested seed from a shop bought Crown Prince squash but, although it does appear to be an F1 hybrid, many seed selling websites and catalogues don't mention this fact.

Could there be more than one squash with the same name?
