Cucumbers
« on: May 24, 2009, 18:18 »
I have had a few cucumber plants just drop dead. No shortage of water and they started off quite well (bought as plant for planting in situ) then suddenly gave up the ghost. Any ideas please?

Have you had a look at the roots for signs of problems?

Anton can you give us a bit more description of what`s happened to the plants? What did they look like as they were dying, was there any marks on the plants? What symptoms did they show?

They just wilted, within the space of one night.

When this happened to one of mine it was because the stem had rotted away.........probably planted too deeply and last year i had one plant eaten through below soil surface level by cutworm.
That's why Ice asked you if you had looked at the roots for problems.
Another point is did you harden the plants off before planting outside? the shock can sometimes kill them :(

I think wilting cucumber is:

Over watering - which can lead to:

Stem rot - don't plant them deep, arrange the soil in the pot so that it slopes away from the stem abd thus when watering water runs away from the stem

Too cold - minimum 10C at night until they are 3' tall at least

I seem to remember a post from last year where someone quoted,

"The first thing a cucumber does every morning is try to find a way to kill itself..."

(which seems to be true!)

I put one in - one lived and one didn't - so they obviously drew straws  ;)

I've just lost two out of two this week, think it was stem rot. Ah well you learn through your mistakes. I don’t like the stuff  :tongue2: but girlfriend loves it, she thinks I might have done it on purpose  ;)
