Chitting seeds
« on: May 24, 2009, 10:45 »
So, I know how to chit potatoes, and also sweetcorn, I even gave my cucumbers a head start by chitting them, my question is...

With me now having to start again (the move and the plot), what else can be chitted? I have some Squash, Beets, Carrots, Sweetcorn, Cucs and Potatoes (if I can find any seeds).

I am going to redo my strawberries, beans, peas and try grapes too if it is not too late.

I read somewhere that anything that can be handled can be chitted but i dont think thats necessarily true - some seeds dont do well in that environment.  Having said that anythings worth a go if it hurries it all along.

I wouldn't chit the ones in red. I know earlier in the year you chit spuds but you don't gain anything by doing it at this time of year..good luck

I chitted all my sweetcorn, 99% success... it would of been 100%, but my 2yr olds football took one out! :tongue2:

You're lucky, whilst we were away, our cats, (we assume, but the evidence wouldn't stand up in court), too out a dozen plants.

It basically means getting the seed into growth before planting, a traditional way of starting Potatoes indoors whilst too frosty to risk outside, but as per this thread, it can be done with other seeds, often the larger, harder to start off ones like putting Peas, Corn and Beans in water for a day to soften and start the germination. Do a search on Chitting Sweetcorn.

I chitted my cucumbers this year with 100% success.  They are now about 3 foot tall.

I am really struggling with my cucs.  Lost one yesterday (2yr old 'helping') so have to start yet again, think this will be my 5th or 6th attempt!

After the failure of the majority of my first pea sowing I chitted my resowings for about 3 days until they looked like DDs sweetcorn (I know, too long in theory). Planted out, all now growing successfully and happily showing above ground after 1 week.
