Snails - I could weep
« on: May 23, 2009, 11:08 »
Have just gone out into the back yard to check on seedlings - I have no sunflowers, two manky sweet peas, no cabbages, and 5 leeks (grass) left.

I know I have only myself to blame for not using slug pellets as regularly as required, but I really could weep.  Last year I had to buy in so many plants as the slugs got them then too, and I was so proud of my seedlings.

Makes you (briefly) wonder why you bother.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Is there any way you can encourage hedgehogs or toads ?

We have a healthy number of hogs (and the occasional duck ::)) and I very rarely find snails or slugs.
The only damage we get is from catterpillars and pigeons.

'Fraid not - it's a terraced house concrete back yard about 3' wide by about 20' long.  No grass or gardens around.

Oh well, off to the racecourse car boot sale next week (will have finished by now for today)

I'll post you some ducks. They'll be fine as long as long as there's plenty of slimy things to eat  :D

Would you like me to post you some Primo II cabbage and some Real leeks seedlings Yorkie ? They are all hardy and have been grown outside - I've got masses and will be sending some out to Mick in Essex on Tuesday - let me know

What a lovely offer barney rubble, thank you so much.

I've popped down to the car boot sale and replaced my red cabbage seedlings, but some leeks would be fab.

I'll PM you my address and you must let me know how much postage is.

I'm sure it's not too late to restart the sunflowers so will get on with all that this week

Feel much better now  :D

oh the highs and lows of growing.  On my second sowing of so much, I put in two rows of sunflowers - have ended up with two mangled ones, my sweetpeas made a tasty meal for the slugs too.
But good response from forum members - cheers allotmenteers :D Your stars

Well I've just spent two hours sorting out the lettuce, the snail and the slugs on the allotment.

I just hope that the thinning out hasn't been too drastic and that tomorrow afternoon everything is standing up proud again.

I read somewhere that you can use ground coffee, slugs and snails hate it. I got myself a job lot for a couple of quid on ebay as the date was up. Been putting this round the plants this year and it seems to work. Should imagine the hedge hogs will thank me too.  :)

As I just posted on another thread, beer traps really work for me. However, I don't know if it is just because Austrian slugs really like beer or not (it is pretty good stuff here actually). I also think it is  not a bad way to go really............drowning in the amber nectar and all

The snails in my water-butt seem slightly pale but still alive.... Not sure how they got in there...slipped, wandered or clambered in I guess.  ::)

If you have fish in your pond be careful - if the snails die they could pollute the water if there are large numbers of them.

I find a quick "crunch" underfoot is the quickest, surest way of reducing their numbers.. :tongue2:
