Planting Potatoes in May
« on: May 21, 2009, 10:49 »
Hi - i'm a newbie here and to the world of allotments!

We just took over a plot at the weekend, we're currently fighting back the tide of weeds! Would love to get some potatoes in, so a few questions:

Is it too late? If not what varieties?
Where can I get hold of see potatoes? If anybody knows a source in Glasgow all the better!

Thanks

Gary

Hi Gary & welcome.

I think the bottom line is - "if you can get hold of any, then plant them". This time of year to have to be grateful for what you can get & don't be choosy.

They'll grow OK, Mrs Digger, (my OH), got given some wizzened Charlotte in June when cleared her plot & we had a splendid crop. Sourcing the seed is the problem.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Excellent - I'll continue keeping an eye out.  It's been slightly cooler here over the past couple of weeks so hopefully that'll buy me some time!

I had been wondering this... I got my earlies in on time, but haven't managed to clear the ground to get my mains in. They are sitting in the shed, chitted and (the pink fir especially) looking a bit wrinkley and sad.

I had thought I'd blown it, but maybe a concerted effort this weekend won't be wasted?

They still have seed potatoes in our local Homebase and garden centre.  You should definately still be able to find some.

I am a novice gardener and I wondered if anyone has grown potatoes that were planted in the late summer?

I have ordered some seed potatoes for the job from JBA autumn potatoes and I decided the Maris peer sounded nice. What kind of crop can I expect?

Are there any pests or diseases that I need to look out for at this time of year?

Hi gary, if you can't get seed potatoes I would still plant some grocery shop ones, just let them go rooty then plant as normal, the last three years we have grown them without any probs, even cheap Spar potatoes did well for us and surprisingly tasty too.  This is my first year using proper seed potatoes so I'm trying them as well as the supermarket ones this year

No way - they're based about 10mins from my Dad's house!

Thanks all for the tips - especially the shop potato idea, since that's how ours often end up.  Will keep you posted on the progress of my novice attempts!

Following a very helpful email chat with Iain I've ordered some King Edwards. Worth emailing, even though the site says out of stock he was still able to fix me up with some!
