First time Tomato grower- when do I feed them
« on: May 18, 2009, 18:28 »
Hi

I have just planted my toms into pots in my grow bags in the greenhouse... all looking really good :)

When do I start feeding them? They have no flowers on and are about 6/7 inches tall.

Also do I water every day or when the soil looks a little dry.

Hiya

Just as they start to flower, every week or so until August. Dont forget to remove side shoots if they are cordons.

Sorry to disagree with aelf but I feed mine when the first fruits have set and the flowers are gone.

no problem, I like to feed early and am happy with my crops. I do start with a weak mix and 'ramp up' as the season progresses.

Works for me!

 :D

I also heap up soil around the base of the tomato plants to encourage extra roots to grow, helps the plant to grow strong and the fruit to grow well

I start to feed, twice a week, when the flowers are on them.

I've only just planted mine in fertilised g/h border and some into big pots for the otherside of g/h.
I figure that if they've just gone into newly fertilised soil or into new multipurp compost, thet there is no reason to feed until the plants are beginning to set fruit. Then i start on weekly tomorite :)
I've planted them deeply, with sunken bottles next to them to water into :)

Ah yes, I had to buy some bottled water so I could have some plastic bottles to do that. Not done it yet, do I cut a hole in the grow back and put the cut bottle in at an angle next to the pots?

hi Mum
this is a new one to me - what do you do with these bottles - drill holes or pin prick them to release the water ? hanks (Tom even if you'll excuse the pun) Thanks

I use the bottles for watering the toms and peppers in the border. I just cut the bottom off, leave the top off and sink the bottle pointy-end down into the border, and just water into them. Makes the toms send down long roots to get the water, whilst keeping top of soil dry, so less evaporation and splashing of fruit, and slugs n snails don't like the dry soil as much.
Tom hanks haha ::)

I was watching a Gardener's World video which explained about the 'feeder' roots and the 'drinking' roots - the feeder roots that take food are shallow and closer to the stem. The water roots are deeper and occupy the rest of the grow bag. So it might be an idea to use the bottle/funnel thing for feeding and somehow get water into the rest of the growbag with another method, keeping it moist.
