compost and manure?
« on: May 17, 2009, 14:09 »
I've just picked up some pallets and was planning on building a compost bin on the lotty. However I have also just picked up some horse manure and was offered as much as I want for free. Can I build a compost bin from the pallets and merely put both composatable materials AND manure in the same bin or do I need one for each??

Cheers

Mick

seperate because the manure is sure to have weed seeds in there already, and the warmth from manure will make any seeds germinate , keep the manure covered with old carpet , or tarp , keep it warm , itll rot down faster

Think I'll just try and sort two bins out then? Or use one of the daleks?

Mix them up. Here is a free download, I have now got to page 73 and the information applies to the usual composting materials. Composting cant be hurried, so 1 to 2 years in the bins, and almost all pathogens and certainly all seeds will be killed off. You can save all the work of turning the heap with a read of the book.

I suggest you read the book. You might be surprised. It's very readable and entertaining. You don't have to use human manure, which is a resource, not a waste product, but there's so much useful information in one book.

Yeah, I spent a bit of time on the Isle of Mull where we ONLY had a compost toilet...not something I fancy re-visiting too soon! lol!!

I put layers of manure in my compost heap (i.e. alternating with layers of composting material) as an accelerator. I just stack the manure in a pile, and add to the compost heap as & when, and anything left in the manure heap goes onto the beds in the autumn.

Not sure I could be fagged to actually shovel it into a "bin" :)
