Sweetcorn problem
« on: May 12, 2009, 12:42 »
Here is a pi of my sweetcorn, I forgot to remove the root trainer lid yesterday and I think they got to hot. Are theyno good anymore and do I still have time to start chitting some more to replace them.

I am so annoyed with myself, I was looking forward to growing sweetcorn.

as soon as they emerge, remove the cover and dont use again.

you have at least 6 survivors on the left hand side though.

I've just started some more as the cats seemed to have got amongst some of mine whilst we were away.

Try pre-chitting if you don't already, it'll save you a good few days.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Make sure they have a bit of shading when the are babies too Baz.  Not many baby plants like too much direct sun  :)

We've had a lot of hot sun here over the last 3 days Baz and a lot of my seedlings got too hot in the greenhouse and started to wilt - I moved them to the coldframe which is in a shadier spot and they have revived nicely, so I'd say definitely give them a chance to recover before binning 'em. Saying that my sweetcorn (which are about the same size as yours) have been fine!

I think, you also should take care of sowing depth, those that keel over just like that, might be too close to the surface.

I wait until mine are at least 6" high, then harden them off.

I would not consider planting outside until at least June, so I think you're about on target for this.

Mine (11 x 24 cell trays) started showing yesterday (top shelf of greenhouse), 5 days after planting, so there's time to re-sow.

But if those failing plants were intended for seed saving, it might be worth keeping the survivors.

Sorry for the ignorance (new veggiegrower)  but, what is chitting.  I'm presuming it's, a sowing process.

Joyce, if you read post #3 on this thread there's a link there to chitting sweetcorn  :)
It's pre-germinating seeds before planting them into compost so that you avoid sowing dud seeds and wasting compost
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I would like to know why people insist on using "covers" when growing stuff in trays   I never do.  I grow my stuff in the conservatory, before then moving them to the plot when the weather has warmed up a bit.  Touch wood, I've never had problems with growing plants in this way.
