Yet another question about broody hens.....
« on: May 07, 2009, 11:04 »
I posted yesterday about my broody hen, and today I made the decision to remove her from the nest and shut the door, (the other 2 hens have laid today). I feel really mean, if I left her and did nothing, would she get over her broodyness all on her own, or would she get weaker through lack of food and become ill? When I picked her up and placed her outside, she just stated in the same position on the ground, although she is now out doing chickeney (?) things, but has taken quite a dislike to the dog, attaking him everytime he steps foot outside the door!

She would get over it but you would still have to encourage her to get off the nest twice a day to eat, drink & poop :)

Some will do this but others need physically picking up & putting outside if you don't she will get weak, ill and :(

Sarah :)

My light sussex went broody about 8 weeks ago.  She had to be lifted out of the nest every day and the door shut to keep her out or she would not eat or drink.  I thought she would be broody forever, and OH had just suggested getting some fertile eggs to put under her this week, when yesterday and today she decided to get up and out on her own!  Hopefully, she will go back to laying again soon.  I waited it out rather than trying dunking her in cold water etc as suggested by some people (not on this site I hasten to add) and am glad I did as she now seems to have given up naturally.
