waiting for eggs!
« on: May 05, 2009, 22:57 »
hi everyone,

Our 3 chickens arrived about 6 weeks ago - 2 pekin bantams and a silver lace wyandotte cross. They were all about at pol when we got them, and the wyandotte started laying pretty soon. In fact we are battling with her to stop her going broody!

However, neither of the pekins have laid a single egg. Should we be worried? Is there anything we should check?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks,

Mark

they were 15 weeks when we got them so will be just over 21 weeks now.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, we were told to expect them to start laying from between 20 - 25 weeks so shouldn't be too long - I've got four but only one is laying so far  :)

I would not worry to much.
Could you supply us with photos?
Are the combs any bigger and more red in colour?
When you go up to your chucks do they crouch down with there wings slightly out stretched?

Hi there,

Sorry for delay...had problems getting picture (and one of our chickens has developed a sneezing problem  :( - the subject of another post).

Their combs seem to be growing (may be wishful thinking  ;) ), but still quite small compared to Lester - the Wyandotte cross who is already laying.

When I approach them they tend to look quizically and then scurry off if I get too close, but don't tend to spread their wings or anything like that.

Sounds like its a matter of waiting  :)

I've attached a picture of bubbles munching around the garden.

Thanks,

Mark

She is beautiful isn't she

She's one of our 2 non layers (as yet). Lester (the layer) is rather more shy and a massive fusspot. She would need to be held with ear defenders on to take a photo  :nowink:

Dont worry, the pekins are pure bred and will take a little longer to come into lay.  ;) You might find you are fighting broodiness in those two pretty soon mind! :D

Already fighting with Lester. After laying 6 eggs a week for about 3 weeks she decided to go broody on us. No eggs and one grumpy chicken.

Every morning she is turfed out of her nesting box and into the garden. She spends all day prowling around very crossly  >:( and the other 2 follow her round as if they are trying to cheer her up. Very sweet, but had to resort back to supermarket eggs  ???

I have decided I love chickens though  ::)

just to let you know, 'bubbles'(one of the pekins) laid her first egg today ::)

She seems very proud of herself, while lester immediately went and sat on it!

What fun!

Thanks for all the advice.
