Geese & chooks living together?
« on: May 05, 2009, 17:05 »
Hi all,

my hen run is becomming overrun with nettles as the chooks don't eat them but I heard that geese love nettles so the obvious sprang to mind...

I have a large shed where the chickens live and could accommodate a couple of geese in there includin providing a larger pop hole but I have no experience of them and their needs...   More reading up needed I feel!

Will geese and chickens live together happilly?  What should I know? (eg I understand that you can't keep chooks and turkeys because of some pathogen between them)  How much should I pay for 2 young geese if I do go ahead?

sorry for all the q's but I'd rather do this organically than reach for the roundup :)

My Geese wont touch nettles  :( Too busy munching the grass

Geese do have a tendancy even when brought up with chickens as Crumb was to grab them shake them about and not let go  Especially round breeding season, hence my lot are now kept away from the hens :)

They seem to hate the orps the most

I would recommend to anyone to get Geese they are beautiful birds, Ganders are naughty between Feb & June  But I think for safeties sake best if they can be housed separate and if you have somewhere else you can put them during the day just incase they don't get on.
Some people do have them living together no problems, the above is just from my experience :D

wasn't planning on any boys just yet; haven't even started breeding chooks yet.

One of the allotment holders does have a few geese on his plot but it's bare (presumably because the geese have picked it clean!)

I wonder if he would loan me them for a few days so I can see how they all get along... after all if they don't then I can give them straight back! :D

Would the geese have done it?
