Couch Grass? the mother ship?
« on: May 03, 2009, 01:07 »
I'm a newcomer to GYO and have a decent sized plot. I have various things coming along OK. But noticed in a new bed I'm working on. What I assume is some couch grass (waxy type roots). As I worked across the bed  I came across thicker and thicker roots. And rather than just snap them off. I traced out what is a bigger- thicker root. Now, I have exposed about 6' of root about 1 inch thick! I can't keep digging it out as it travels under a large   compost heap I've built. And beyond that God knows where it goes!
I wondered, could I drill a hole in it and inject some sort of systemic killer into it. Or should i just string it up and torment it! I know that tree surgeons use something nasty to kill tree stumps? Any ideas out there?

Be careful, have one end of a rope tied round your waist and the other end tied to a convenient stake, just in case the Triffid root grabs you :tongue2:

Try 'Stump Away' but you have to cut the root and apply the killer to the root!

I don't think it is couch grass, though I could be wrong, I usually am ::)
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

I guess you have figured it it isn't Couch grass by now  :)

It is probably a tree root, you can either put up with it, or chop it off, but don't use chemicals on it.

I regularly chop off tree roots on my plot  ::)

I tend to find that they put out some more fibrous roots but aren't usually a huge ongoing problem.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes. you are ALL correct!  Early this morning i decided i would string it up to a nearby bush and make it suffer ( therapy for me of course) then i remembered that there's a 30' high birch tree about 10' away! I'm not getting obsessed by couch grass you understand
The penny then dropped!
The upside is that the section we were working over for our courgettes had been really well dug over!!!!!!!!!!

Parhap's there should be a Dumbo Icon

Thanks all
