Metal bedframe base - possible frame for beans?
« on: April 29, 2009, 09:54 »
Living in Glasgow I am sadly accustomed to a rather bizarre tolerance of fly tipping on city streets. Technically residents can dump almost anything for kerbside collection once a week, which means everyone just hurls old furniture, mattresses, trash etc onto the pavement over the weekend for our neighbourhood's Monday collection.

Our tenement neighbours are worse, since they can't be bothered to even lift their waste out to the street, leaving it in our garden. However, this means I've salvaged two of these (see photo)... they're the metal frame base sections of an old bunk-bed / desk thing. 900mm x 1000mm, with square section frame and a grid of steel in between.

If we were to stake these (perhaps with steel reinforcement bars down the two sides with open ends) would these make useable frames for French Beans (or even courgettes) to grow up?

Any thoughts, suggestions? Thank you!

I could do with something like that for my peas.

Come to Glasgow, I'm sure we can find you something dumped on the streets of Govanhill  :D

We were offered some peas from a friend with a better greenhouse than ours for delivery a few weeks ago, but we haven't heard anything since so will probably use these for beans.

Wouldn't 1m be a bit short for climbing beans?  Maybe you could use it as part of a Munty frame, or (depending on how you secure it) build an extension with stakes and string somehow, though.

I haven't tried anything more exciting than bamboo wigwams, so I don't know how much my advice is worth, mind!

you'd have to put the two together to make a 2m high frame.

yes, join with the bar.
did you not manage to salvage the edges of the frame that join the two together on the bed?

I think so, we got most of the bits. I think what I might do is fine some steel re-bars to stake into the ground in the two sides of the frame that have open-ended square-sections. Where these protrude from the top of the frame I could then run wire or string horizontally between them to make taller growing space. That would suit our plot layout a bit better

If that doesn't make sense, here's a doodle..... :)

Thanks all!

that looks quite pretty.
I hope it'll be tall enough - I suppose you can nip the top of the stalks at the required height (don't quote me on this because I don't know if this can be done)

there's a feature in Kitchen garden anout a recycled garden and they use one for beans and sweetpeas so It will work fine.

Just thinking about an old bed in the garage waiting to be dumped.... she wonders off....
