Mrs.Novice still says I got carried away with my'taters...
I got Pentland Javelin, Estima, King Edwards, and Desiree....
....and I'm pleased to say, it makes my plot look like a proper allotment now.

I'm feeling rather smug! We ate our first potatoes on Saturday, just in time to show off to our bank holiday weekend guests! They were Suttons Foremost. Chosen by the lady in the allotment shop - we said we wanted something idiot proof and that's what we got. They were yummy, but I'm not sure about the yield. Is 6ish largish per plant reasonable? We have Picasso for maincrop.

I read somewhere that for earlies, you only get a handful or so per plant unless someone here has had better results? :)
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

Depends how long you leave them - I'd expect quite a few more than that.

I think we had over a kilo on many last year, but some were left to the point where they were quite big spuds.

We had our first 'proper' feed off the Red Duke of Yorks today for tea.  They fed 4 & took three roots to find enough....having said that I'd acknowledge that I'm pushing it a bit lifting them for a few days yet, but I put a lot in so I can afford to lift early.  What was noticeable is that compared to the couple of roots I lifted for Sunday dinner a week last Sunday ( which were seriously small !).....several tubers were almost too big.... & I had to stagger putting them in to cook them so they all 'did' at about the same time.  Pretty impressive making up in around 11 days.  Even then around 30% had hardly started to swell & if they'd had another 11 days there would have been a bumper lot.
......straight lines are for tidy minded people.....

Just had the first 'lift' of Pomfine today for lunch.  Described as a Salad Potato, these really are exceptional ( I knew they would be with a name like Pomfine ).  They are a classic French 'salad variety'....so suitable for boiling 'new' & eating hot, or as I prefer cold with salad & meat or cheese.  Very firm & 'waxy', superb flavour, a mid oval, pure white flesh & skin, which cleaned up with a couple of bits of wet paper tissue in a sink of cold water.  Good yield....still very early to lift but the seed tubers are small so you gets lots to 3kg.  They will go on my absolute "must have" list for next year.  Highly recommended....Tuckers for one do the 'seed'.
