Help with weed clearing, suggestions.
« on: April 25, 2009, 00:08 »
Can anyone suggest something I can use to keep down the weed seedlings growing apace between my onions, shallots, garlic and around my peas, etc...
I have a hoe, but it's too unwieldy for the small space between the plants.
Normally I find something to do the job but I'm at a loss as far as careful weeding is concerned.
Thanks for any tips.

You could try putting a mulch down. This will suppress a lot of the weeds, and any that get through will be weakened and easier to deal with.

A trowel is useful for digging out individual weeds.

Onion hoes used to be popular - only 2in wide, short handle-  for the fiddly bits, but lots of bending.
Many swear by a 'Swoe'  - long handled hoe with a pointy blade attached at one end only so able to get into tight spots
Theres always hands and knees weeding - said by some to be therapeutic after a hard day at the office - best with a good kneeler
Then there's prevention, I used to grow onions through holes in a weed supressant membrane - reduced weeding by 90%
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

I use a bog standard hoe & find no problems.

Are your plants too close toether?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My onions are growing in raised beds and are too close together for a hoe.  I use a fork from the kitchen.  It works on very knew growths so you have to do it regularly but it does look much better when most of them are out!  (which mine are not at the moment!!)

Thanks all, I don't think the onions etc are too close, but I stupidly didn't plant the individual plants  in parallel to the preceding row making it hard to get the hoe through. Will give the fork a go or revert to hand weeding.

I spread manure carefully around my onions/garlic this spring . Didn't dig it in, just left it ontop as a mulch and it's really done the trick with keeping the weeds down. Dunno whether I was just lucky or what? but onions look really well. :)

Not sure on the size and shape of the onion bed but I have a bed of about 1mtrx1.5mtr and lots of overwintering onions.

Also got lots of small weeds so I went and bought a bag of sharp sand from Wilks. Slightly course to the hand. I spread this by hand around all the onions. At the same time hand picking out any significant weeds that were sprouting.

Seems to have come out about an inch or so deep and has compacted down nicely. No weeds have made it through in the last 3 weeks and the onions are doing fine. Hoping that the sharp sand deters slug and snails also. Acts as a good mulch as it allows water through.

Come the end of the season it will simply get dug in to aid drainage.
