Diatomaceous Earth (food grade)
« on: April 16, 2009, 21:12 »
Does anybody use DE in their hen house and on the chickens. I've been told this is a good all rounder for keeping mites, louse and worms at bay.
The recommendation was to sprinkle on the floor and amongst the litter in the hen house and also add to the dust bath and occasionally dust the chickens. I t was suggested that along with a regular good clean of the house this should prevent mites or louse from bothering my chickens too much and that it is safe to use.
Does anyone agree with this or have any better ideas for keeping nasties at bay?
Thanks :)

I use diatom in the coop and on the birds.  Also use red mite powder which smells gorgoeus, alternate them.  I haven't had to use anything wet in there yet but would use Jeyes for a good clean down, maybe when it's warmer so it dries, needs to be dry to let the girls back in.

That's good to know Looby I was worried everything would get too wet and wouldn't be able to get them back in.   The wet thing scares me a bit, stupid I know.  Hate the thought of damp getting in there really.
