How much to plant
« on: March 26, 2007, 21:21 »
Hello, as a novice I am wondering how much to plant of everything, for example, how3 many early potatoes should I put in if I want to feed a family of 6 for a few weeks? How many does 1 plant grow?

Also how many broad bean seeds should I plant? I have 35 in the packet is that too many?

Things like courgettes I have decided 2 - 3 plants, not sure on the sweetcorn or runnerbeans, the onions I have done 100, didn't have room for any more.  I have a big plot but it is not all ready yet.

How much of everything is everyone else planting?

I planted 50 strawberry plants....but there's only two of us to eat them really...i found that i had too many after make all manner of strawberry jams etc....however, i also gave off a fair few too so none went to waste and it's nice to share.  Once they get fruiting they do tend to give loads.  Cutting them back to 30 this year see if it helps any.

What about carrots? for four adults.

We probably eat carrots with our evening meal five or six times a week and I also add them to my salad or soup at lunchtime probably about two to three times a week.   (Its a wonder I'm not orange)

So how many rows do you reckon?

We eat a lot also and have found that 3 rows is ample for the 3 of us. But of course it depends on the size of the row!

Mine are about 10m - 32 & a bit feet. I plant one row of Early Nates, for early pulling as baby carrots - not so babies when you get to the end of the row - one row of intermediates & one row of Autumn King, (some of those do us 2 meals).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Where is the best place to get strawberry plants? They seem expensive on nursery websites, we don't have any in our lidl! In wilkinsons they had some in a packet but all I could see in the bag was compost and was not sure what you do with the plants inside. They must be tiny.
