Pumpkins and cross polination?
« on: April 16, 2009, 09:00 »
Further to my other post, can I plant pumpkins of different types near each other or will they cross polinate?  I have some seeds for small halloween pumpkins plus some others (can't remember the name)????

Cross pollination will not affect the fruits on this years plants but if you save the seed the offspring will be a mixture of the parents characteristics. This applies to any plants but especially to F1 hybrids which may themselves be crosses of extreme types.

They will cross pollinate, but it's only in next year's crop that you'll see the difference if you saved the seed.

I've posted this before, but it well illustrates what happened when my pumpkins crossed with a marrow!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That’s fantastic! (I may now try saving seed just for the comedy value).

I actually gave the plants to another plot holder. They were suppose to be trailing marrows. I keep forgetting to ask him if he ate them!

They look like the small ornamental gourds in the piccies, but at the time they were 12" long!

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

The plants were given to a plot neighbour. He says he ate them, but I keep forgetting to ask how he cooked them.
