French beans
« on: April 15, 2009, 18:10 »
I'm very excited - I have one, yes one, French climbing bean that has germinated in its little paper pot on the window sill  ::) Here's hoping the other 30 odd follow suit.....

Bit of a grotty day here today & looks like the plots out, so I'm just considering sowing mine as I daren't put them out until June after what happened last year!

I've got 3 sorts - "Purple Teepee" - a dwarf bean that bears the beans above the foiliage so you can see to pick the beans, "Violet Podded Stringless" a purple climbing French bean, also a green climbing French Bean that mutated from the purple one - tastes good though!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We grow Limka (cl. fr. bean) as an alternative to Runners (which our family is not mad about). It is flat, and stringless of course, so has similar appearance to a Runner.

I'm not trying any more at the moment, I save my own seed and have just sown 112 Enorma, & 150 climbing French beans! But thanks for the suggestion.  :D

Glad to hear that JW, I'm growing them for the first time this year, sown about 20 or so in paper pots last weekend, as well as a couple of dwarf varieties and a couple of runners too.  Shed and plastic greenhouse are filled with trays full of paper pots  8)

I'm trying a new one called "Kentucky Wonder Wax" from Johnson's World Kitchen range. It's supposed to be really succulent and tasty. Will let you know! :tongue2:
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

A sound plan for next year for me then, as got fed up making paper pots
How far apart do you sow them, bearing in mind it's not for that long?
