Leggy plants
« on: March 25, 2007, 20:42 »
Hello
I've been grow on some seeds inside to give them a head start, the problem is my broad beans have gone "leggy".  They cant support themselves but I have tied them up.  Are they worth continuing with or shall I give up on them?
Any help gratefully received.

I haven't grown veg for a few years now (lots of flowers though), but we had our previous allotment for about 12 years.

I don't think leggy seedlings ever do as well as well grown stocky ones.  I have found that trying to get things off to an early start often gives no advantage.  I've always left seed sowing until later and my crops always caught up and I think grew more vigorously than things which get off to a leggier early start.

dont know what causes it realy but i will have a guess or 2
1.not enough light
2.stood in compost with no feed
3.not enough water at the roots (capillary matting might help)
4.to hot/to cold
5 ????????
feed the soil not the plants
