I also found one of those mice/vole things and her nest of new-born babies in my manure heap while digging it out. Unfortunately I had destroyed the nest before I realised they were there, but I tried to move the babies somewhere safe and when I checked later they had gone from there, so I hope the mother managed to move them somewhere even safer.

Am I the odd one out here? When I see a Robin I burry the worms rather than lay them out – better they are in the ground, breaking it up for me than lining the Robins belly!

I also have mice that I have left alone, they seem to cause no problem provided I top the compost heap up for them on a weekly basis!

(It is resting on the back of my glove).

You are not alone encouraging / tollerating the mice. My wife took a great deal of care not to disturb the nest & family she found in her home-garden compost heap. "Sadly" (?) one was squashed when she threw a heavy carpet on top to cover the heap one day....

Shame... but I guess if they are field mice they are a great deal better than house mice - yuck  :tongue2:

My Dad feeds the ones in his garden with bird seed -- they are incredibly tame now and scurry about along the base of the wall in the graden in full view  :)

We get pheasants, crows, a lovely robin, foxes and too many rabbits.  Last year we even had a wasp start building a nest in our shed at the allotment - I'm afraid we had to 'deal' with it. The picture below shows the early stages of construction.

"The Bug" turned up the other day.... huge big beetle. One of the largest I've seen in UK other than the stage-beetle (which I thought was blacker than this and had "antlers" (?))

I seem to recall seeing this in my "I-spy book of insects" but, as it was a very long time ago, can't recall its name or anything about it.

It wasn't far from a small pond - Diving Beetle?

Any ideas?

Ah!....

Bunnies!

(Thanks to the on line crossword puzzle solver!)

Is bunnies a rude word then?
Arguably not, but around here it's usually preceded by very rude words.   :nowink:

That beetle pic reminded me of an enormous white beetle we once found in our garden -  never seen anything like it before or since - over an inch long, white, with a sort of rhino horn on it's head - anyone know what this could have been?

A very pale stag beetle? Albino?

The cockchafer = May bug was really huge - several inches in size

Found a hibernating frog in the earth of one of my much neglected patio pots. Was very startled because I thought it was a stone until it moved. I also thought that they were supposed to come out of hibernation in April and it's now May.

So, the pot has been returned to its former spot until the frog decides to leave.

Was it definitely a frog and not a toad?

Did it hop or walk?  Was it smooth skinned or warty?

You might be lucky – toads are, sadly, quite rare these days…

I love toads.  In the last place I lived (Artist's Valley near Machynlleth) there was a good size pond with hundreds and hundreds of toads, there were so many it was practically Biblical.

Little Robin Readbreast
Sat upon a rail.
Niddle, naddle went his head;
Wiggle, waggle went his tail.
