I found this site for weed ID  - dunno why its got whisky in the URL though

http://www.bayercropscience.co.uk/whiskycomp.aspx?sec=1036&con=1040&fn=fullbroad

It still doesn't tell me what this is

I panicked when I thought it was knotweed but it lacks the red veins on the leaves.  It has clearly grown from seed.

looks like it could be a sweet potato to me WG.

other weed query could be grape hyacinth - until it gets round to flowering it looks like grassy bits with white bulbs on the bottom.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

bindweed / sweet potato, yes, I think you've got it.   I do have bindweed elsewhere so perhaps it is a self seed from that.  The leaf certainly looks familiar.

Thanks for the replies

alas its onion couch grass and it is proving quite a challenge, but not unsurmountable.  You just have to be vigilant and then snaffle the stuff lock stock etc and then pop it in the bin.  thank you  all for your help and advice. group hugs liz :D
