Autumn-planted asparagus?
« on: April 07, 2009, 19:27 »
We put some asparagus in last autumn after I read on the net that you could do it. No sign of them however; have we ruined our chances by not waiting till spring, or are they just still in bed?

They can still be sleeping as the roots were so new. When I planted my newest roots, I placed small twigs as markers to know if any didn't come up. Took a long time for them to settle but eventually they made an appearance. Once established, they're up early in the season. aka be patient.

Hi.

Should be ok. A bit of cold does them good apparently.

Should start to show through from now through to May/June.

I planted mine in late Feb. 3 spears have broken through.

PUP!
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Ooh brilliant - thanks :) We did mark them with canes when we put them in, so I'll be patient.

The first shoots are just showing on established beds here. A bit of warmth and the promised rain will get them on the move. Dig down carefully and see if you can find shoots. Carefull you do not knock them off.

The asparagus is up! Two spears about 3" tall have appeared seemingly overnight - DH was so excited he practically had tears in his eyes :) This is the man who's allegedly not interested in gardening and would much rather spend all his waking hours on the laptop.
