Feeding Chilli plants
« on: April 07, 2009, 12:31 »
I have been growing chillies for a few years now and have always fed them with tomato feed one the fruits set. However, I have read a few places this year that you should never feed chilli plants as it just produces more foliage and doesn't affect the number of fruit... true or false?

Cheers
SG

Do the same as you SG and it has never seemed to inhibit flower formation. Possibly the problem might be that if they are fed before they start flowering and with a general fertiliser, rather than the high potash tomato feed that is designed to help fruit set, that will force them to carry on producing leafy growth (too much nitrogen?).
Having said that I gave my overwintering lemon drops a high seaweed feed as they were looking a bit yellow last month and they are now dripping with flowers eevn though they are still smaller than when they flowered last year.

I think it is on the Chilliman site he recomends to start feeding at the four leaf stage a weak solution once a week, last year I used growing success chilli fertilizer mixed in the compost then when the fruits appeared they got a potash feed once a week.

Chilli focus is the feed that I use.

Hi, if it's a low nitro. and high potash feed it won't encourage green growth, tomorite once a week.
