The chilli plant surviving story
« on: March 29, 2009, 18:24 »
Just a quick picture of a chilli plant that managed to survive the winter in my tiny unheated greenhouse. When I check it a couple of month ago, I thought that I should throw it away as it looked very dried out & dead from the cold winter ::)
As I was just about to reach for the bin & said my last good bye I noticed that a couple of shoot were timidly appearing at the bottom of the plant.
So I cut the dried out main stem & after a lot of TLC in the form of the warmth in my kitchen & Chilli plant feed here's the result. It's not a lot but it's a start :tongue2:

Good for you Remy!

Mine died  :(

I've put some chilli seeds in a seed tray today and thrown them in the greenhouse .... No idea what I'm doing , but I suppose they will either grow or they won't  ???

I don't even eat the things!

If it's a cold greenhouse bring them indoors as peppers need warnth to germinate. 70f is best. The seeds can take up to 4 weeks to show in colder tempretures. Do not over water them.
If all else fails read the instructions.

Hmmm...... Maybe I'd better rescue mine and lodge them in Mum's spare room then.

Greenhouse certainly isn't heated , isn't really a greenhouse either , just one of those frame things with a heavy duty plastic cover over it well tied to the fence!  ???

I've got the same but seems to do the job! I'm thinking of getting one of those parrafine heaters for green house but not sure if it'll be to powerful for it.

I wintered over two pepper plants in the south facing back bedroom.  I now have one green pepper formed on one of the plants.  So glad as my husband was snickering at those plants all winter long! :D
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Give your peppers as much light as possible. South facing window is perfect. Lots of people have trouble seeding peppers. Just remember these rules:
1.   Warmth 70f if possible. Lower temps, longer germination.
2.   Light: as much as possible.
3.   Good drainage: Seeding: 50/50 seeding compost sharp sand. Potting on 3-in-1 compost and sharp sand. Only pot up when the pepper has a good root system.
4.   Water: People over water peppers. The seeds will rot if over watered. Peppers are drought tolerant as all peppers originate from South America. As a mature plant you can let them get quite dry with droopy leaves. A bit of water…….presto……..Water in the evening.
5.   When the peppers flower gently shake to help pollination.
6.   All above work for me. Peppers make great house plants.

Again sorry late reply playing catcup.

Pollination. Gently shake your peppers to pollinate. If you have more than one type of pepper growing then it's a good chance they will cross pollinate. Cross pollination will not affect this years crop. It will however, effect the seeds. So, if your cross pollinate a sweet pepper with a hot pepper then sow the seeds you may well end up with a hot sweet pepper and a sweet hot pepper. Who knows? Try it.  :D

You can use an artist's paintbrush to gently pollinate them, I'm gonna be putting mine out during the day so hopefully flies/ bees will do the honours for me!
