Poundland Fish Blood & Bone
« on: March 28, 2009, 10:41 »
In Poundland yesterday to pick up some window boxes (yep, a pound each, even if they are plastic rather than terracotta) and saw 1kg boxes of J. Arthur Bower brand 'organic based' Fish Blood & Blone.

Our potatoes, shallots and garlic are already in, but could anyone recommend the right time (because advice seems to differ) about when to use it? We're planning french beans, lettuces, courgettes, onions beetroot and a selection of herbs in addition to the above. Is there anything that should not have it?

And yes, I have searched the forum for other similar questions but wanted to ask more specifically about our planting programme and this brand. Many thanks for any tips.

I tend to use it as I plant or just before I sow, raking it in as I prepare the area, as I understand it BFB releases it's nutrients over time. I tend to reapply as I remember, about 4-6 week intervals depending on the crop. Things like lettuce and beetroot would only get one dressing in it's life time, potatoes will get 2 usually as they go in and then on about the last time I earth up.
I don't grow a lot of herbs but never really feed those that I do anyway.
Courgettes I'd be tempted to add it a week or so before you plant and then gently hoe in about every month,
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Great Q and thanks for the answer RR.  I picked up a box of this last weekend as £1 seemed so cheap!

Just one last thing it will work a lot better if hoed gently into the soil rather than just scattered and forgotten.

I picked the same stuff up today but from our local 99p shop!
I used a whole box on an 8ft by6ft bed , Should I add another box to it now or leave till later?
The wind got rid of some! It was very fine!
Cheers
