Butternut Squash seeds
« on: March 26, 2009, 11:28 »
Having a butternut squash for my dinner today (yum) .

Just wondered if there any use for the seeds? can i use any to grow some more squashes?

Cheers

You could try, but the squash family are pretty promiscuous and readily cross so no knowing what you may get  ;)

Give it a go.  I grew one last year from a supermarket bought squash and it grew like a triffid.  Too bad the weather wasn't good enough for it to ripen before it rotted. :(

I pretty certain that it will be a success.  Go for it and try.

I put some seeds in from a shop-bought butternut squash at the same time as the packet seeds.  So far, only the packet seeds are showing - but I have faith!  Still plenty of time for them!

if you dont want to grow them you can roast them in the oven with a drop of oil and some salt and peper and eat them

Two years ago (last year was poor for squash) i used seed from a super-market squash and had 46 full size squash plus some small ones off 6-7 plants.
It`s well worth a go , just pray for a summer with a lot of sun.

Quick question -- mine are a bit leggy so when I transplant them should I plant them up to their shoulders? I've only ever grown pumpkins in situ so am not sure if this will be OK or not.

Advice please from you squash peeps

NO don't plant deeper they will rot, if anything you need to plant them on a mound to keep their necks dry.......

Not a problem....as the plant gets bigger it will thicken up but i like to tie them to a small cane to make sure that cack handed me don't snap them in the mean time::)

:D I'm not actually left handed this saying is used in cockney as clumsy! I was born under Bow bells so i am a proper cockney...not like Jamie Oliver (and many others)
