Should I chuck my seed potatoes
« on: March 24, 2009, 12:46 »
I didn't have enough space to chit all of my potatoes.  I left some in a dark place.  Of course now they have sprouted huge white sprouts.  Look pretty scary actually.   Is there anything I can do except to chuck them?

Farmers chit in sheds with strip lighting 24 hours. If the chits get big they sometimes rub all the chits off and start again.

Hope this helps, it was taken from a previous post on same topic :)

I would stick them in anyway rather than chuck them.
I'm sure they'll still grow.

After all, ones which you miss when harvesting go on to make healthy plants the next year (in the wrong place!).

As long as the tubers are still firm and not rotten just remove the long white sprouts and plant the tubers :)

I agree with all above, rub off the long white sprouts and they will re-sprout fine

Yes, but remember that in using uncertified seed potatoes you do run the risk of passing on diseases.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just as an addition - the guy on the plot in between mine & Mrs Digger's had chits on his spuds as long as your arm last year.

He planted them with the chits sticking out of the ground.(again).

They died. BUT he still got a harvest from them as the spud would have made new growth underground. Hence you may as well knock off the long ones in the first place.

Short and purple/brown is good as they are less likely to be damaged when you plant them, nad shows you chitted them in the light, not the back of the veg cupboard!
