What be this mystery seedling?!
« on: March 14, 2009, 12:06 »
It came out of a pack of pepper seed packet but it certainly doesn't look like a pepper with it's glossy/hairy leaves.

Any guesses?

Looks a bit like a teasel, especially with the glossy hairy aspects.

A weed is only a plant in the wrong place! it could be something interesting so grow it a bit and see.

If it has a knick in the ends of the seed leaves it may be cleavers. Otherwise not sure and could be a garden flower seed or something exotic.

My first guess is cucumber, or something from the squash family.

the cotelydons (sp?) don't quite look thick enough for cucumber to me, plus the true leaves don't look like any cuc that I've ever grown...?

whatever it is it's healthy! :D

In my experience (ie my front garden ::) ) my cleavers have similar true leaves to the cotelydons and they don't look as robust as this seedling, so I agree with sunshineband and maybe transplant it, grow it on.  At the worst you'll be able to identify a voratious man-eating plant from seedling, at best you'll have a unique plant
