Can anyone recommend any 'lady' tool stockists?
« on: March 09, 2009, 21:37 »
The forks and spades at the plot are a good size for my 6ft OH, but Im starting to realise they are too heavy for me so does anyone reccommend any? If so, where can I find them reasonably priced? Do I need to look for a brand name?

Peapod,
Try using a border spade and fork.
Much smaller than the 'he-man' tools, but much lighter and easier to handle.
They will do exactly the same job but make life easier for you.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.

I just got a Joseph Bently full size fork as i broke mine they had the border forks as well as the ladies range in Weyvale. They look like they should be up to the job im going to try my best to break it tomorrow while trying to remove the bramble and dog rose roots.

I've always used a boarder fork and spade.  Most tool companies make them.

when I saw the title I thought of a specialist shop in the high street known for catalogues and parties  but now I get it:  Lidl are doing cheap tools at the mo.  I bought a spade for £8 and some hand tools for £4 the lot.  They had border spades etc

I piked up a trowel in wilkos and though that feels good gave it a bend and the head feel away from the handle opps.  Give it a good bend in all directions and see if its up to the job.  I was going to go for a cheapy but then thought its going to be in use a long time and lots until i get the bramble roots out. If it breaks its got a 25yr garantee(sp?) which was the winning factor.

Hey who gave you the key? I never saw you, either. Can you go invisible too?

I have a full sized stainless steel fork from Wilko's £5 in the end of season sale a couple of years ago, but I don't have much use for a spade ( I only use one for digging out paths and planting holes) so I find the border size more appropriate, I can't remember how much I paid, but it wouldn't have been much over a tenner. I had wanted to buy ladies size tools but they are a bit of a rarity and so usually carry a premium price.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I never understand why 'lady' sized tools cost more, considering how many women gardeners are out there and that less material is used. Do they think we all have 'charge me more because I'm female' written on our foreheads?  >:(
