Planting a pear tree
« on: March 07, 2009, 22:59 »
M-I-L let me dig up a 5 year old pear tree from her back garden as it hadn't done anything in 5 years - it was 18 inches from a much bigger tree and when i got it out didn't have a very developed root system. It is just beginning to bud. She has no idea what size it will grow to, thinks it's a comice but not sure as it's never fruited for her. I don't know whether there are any pears on the plots, definitely some apples around though. So
  • What's the biggest it could grow to
What should I do to prepare the ground for planting
Any pests to look out for
How can I encourage it to fruit?

  • What's the biggest it could grow to
I have recently planted a comice pear and although I bought a very dwarfing rootstock I was reading that they could get to 30' in height unless you specifically choose a good, small variety!!

  • What should I do to prepare the ground for planting
I prepared my ground just by digging a big hole; larger than the root area by 1' all round and about 2' deep, and then filled the hole with just under a foot of well rotted manure then a sprinkling of soil to create a barrier between the roots and manure and then put the pear in.  Didn't put a stake in the ground because I wanted it to 'stand on it's own roots!'

  • Any pests to look out for

not sure about this....  need to look it up in a book ::)

I think just looking after it as normal; ie manure in springtime; grease bands etc to keep the moths off.

pear trees need other types of pear trees to polinate but not just any pear tree they fit into certain groups

Thank you both - off to get me shovel & manure then  :)

If it doesn't fruit this year then I'll have to buy it a girlfriend  :D

Just wondering how much shade it will cast - this is going to change my planting plans a bit as i hadn't allowed for shade at all !

Ah well - planB or is it C ? - here we come!

It's probably a seedling (as I can't imagine anyone would plant trees 18" apart), which means it's on its own roots, which means it'll be a *big* tree when it's fully grown, and fairly slow (10 years +) to start cropping.  Unless you have a very large garden, I think you'd be better off getting something on quince rootstock, and training it to keep it smaller.
