What to do next
« on: February 28, 2009, 21:25 »
Hi all, I have cleared a patch of ground of some very old brambles.

I have dug the roots out, some of which are the size of melons.

Then I dug the ground over with my trusty spade.

Now I have a patch of dug-over ground, big enough to plant my 'taters. But the ground is all now turned clumps of earth, some of which are quite big. I obviously cant just shove my taters into it like it is.

Whats the best way of breaking up these clumps so that I can plant? I'm working sans power tools on principle.

Thanks!

Ive got a cultivator ( I think thats what its called) with 5 prongs in a square with a prong at each corner and one in the middle that you twist into the soil, this breaks the sods up perfectly for me.  You could also try waiting for a week,as there are more frosts forecast which may break them up slightly. A fork is good too, but soil needs to be non-claggy

Wait a wee while till it dries off and not sticky..then try again with a fork.
Or, if you want to get a cultivator..I got mine from B&Q for around £12.
