Hi All

Nearly there with the new housing, just have some questions about sizing for nesting boxes if anyone can help please?

What is the best size for nest boxes:

a) for egg laying
b) for a broody/ hatching

I am planning to make them out of MDF and want to get it right from the start if possible!

It would be possible to section one area of the hen house off if I manage to get a broody so I could create 2 tyes of boxes if this would help........ or am I taking all this too seriously and getting FAR too complicted

You are making life hard for yourself!  Nest boxes need to be  basically as big as your hens body when they sit down with a touch either side should they want to ruffle feathers and have a turn around.  So if you have big hens you will need a slightly larger nest box.  If you have small hens....I think you get the picture!  Even for a broody, as long as she can shuffle about, she will pull the eggs right under her so they don't have to be too big.  Hope this has put it into perspective (no punn intended).

Thanks for this Mrs Ploppy - I just needed some practical advice after all the conflicting things I have read in far too many books!
