Chrysanth cuttings
« on: February 17, 2009, 16:16 »
Anyone grow spray chrysanths? I've been taking some cuttings from my chrysanths that I overwintered in my greenhouse & wondered if it's worth keeping the original (stool) plants as some varieties aren't producing as many shoots as I'd like?

I don't do chrysanth cuttings myself, but I know when I buy the potted chrysanths, that the centre parts seem to die while the outer edges have healthy new growth. A lot of plants do this as a way to regenerate, so I imagine the lesser producing  originals aren't going to truly recover. You might just put them in a separate bit of space and see how well they'll do but I suspect poorly.

Thanks Trillium. I haven't really noticed this as the plants are ony one year old & then usually replaced by the cuttings, so they don't produce old centres usually. I have grown the parent plants, as well as the cuttings, in previous years & not noticed much difference in their production of flowers - hence the reason I asked really.
