Pest ID needed please.
« on: February 17, 2009, 11:30 »
Who, besides me, is eating my perp spinach?  It's not slugs because the same is happening to my cabbages and they are protected with slug pellets.

Cheese makes everything better.

Are flea beetles active this time of year ?  Could birds reach through the net ?

I'd go for the latter!  - Put some pop bottles over the tops of the canes, and throw the netting over that. Then peg down and pull it taught.
Life begins... On the kitchen windowsill.

They are all netted off.  The one in the foreground does touch the net but the others are too far in for it to be birds, unless we have humming birds.  I thought flea beetle was a pest around April time.

I still reckon it's slugs or snails, perhaps they prefer the greens to slug pellets!
I know i had the little bu@@ers eating my swede rather than pellets

We still have little green caterpillars active, well the odd one has been found on my Kale. Have a good look around.

I've had a look but can't see anything.  Slug pellets are still fresh and nothing under the leaves.  Got to sort it as the plants are being ruined. >:(

I just cut last manky looking cabbage and it had fat green caterpillars in it.
Wouldn't you think that the cold had killed them

Looks like slugs.

Just because you put pellets down it does not mean they have to eat them. I am sure that slugs are attracted to pellets by smell and it could be that in the cold conditions the pellets give off little.

Ice, Have you got any pigeons around you? They'll go for anything green this time of year. Mostly at dawn when most (civilised) people are still in bed.

Keep an eye out!

If there appears to be little holes in the leaves... it could be whitefly.

All you need is some 'sprayday' and that should sort it
