Rose end
« on: February 15, 2009, 11:41 »
First year of chitting potatoes (they've kept beautifully in the fridge, thanks for the tip Aunt Sally  :)) and they're on the window-sill in an unheated bedroom ready to go.

Erm - which end is the rose end? On some of them (Arran Pilot) both ends look the same  ??? and the description the books of 'the one with more eyes on' isn't helpful in the least as, again, I can't tell one from t'other.

Does it really matter ?
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

I am sure all will be revealed when the chits start to grow. Any you find with chits underneath you can turn over. On the bottom end of every potato is the place where the potato was attached to the mother plant. It is not always obvious. The "eyebrows" of every eye are below each chit.

It is the opposite end to the one that was joined to the parent plant.  So if you can see where it was broken away from the old root you've sussed it  ;)

I've got a lot to learn about the humble potato ! Been following all threads on chitting over the past couple of months and when it got down to it (today) had great difficulty in identifying which end was which on half of them  Have to follow Salmo's advice and turn over the wrong ones. I do wish they had "eyebrows" like mine, I couldn't miss them then  :D :D :D
Paul, Andrew, Kevin, Galen - My parents got bored of normal names in the end!
