New raised beds *pics*
« on: February 13, 2009, 16:32 »
A primary school put some linkabord raised beds on freecycle, and they said that we could have them!  :D OH had just started making a raised beds out of old pallets, but these are SO much better!!! We love them  :D

We made them up this morning - but now we have the trouble of finding ways to fill them cheaply    everywhere i've looked has been around £300-£400 for the amount we need  :(

Anyway.. pics!  :D

Trying to live the good life.. getting there slooooowly...

I would dig them over and plant in what you have already.  You can build the depth up over time with other things.  I use manure, spent compost my own compost and sharp sand.
Cheese makes everything better.

Though it's a bit of work, it costs nothing to dig up a few inches of your topsoil all around the beds and put that in the raised beds.

Seconded!

You'll be surprised how quickly they fill up.
I bought in topsoil for mine to get away from the heavy clay, got enough to fill each bed to around 4" from the top. Over the 3 years we have been using them they have completely filled to the point i now have to remove soil in order to add compost etc..

2 beds i didn't have soil for, just added compost for same length of time and they are over half full now.

Thanks for trying Ice, if it works in the future we may have a credit crunch busting business.
